I did enjoy this book - titled The Skylark War in the UK - because of the subtle way it allows young people to begin to learn about the emotional effects of war. It takes place before and during WWI. Clarry is a child being brought up without a mother, and without any ambition,until a bevy of older women mentors take her under their wing. She begins to get an education and I followed her progress, almost sure of what the outcome would be, but not absolutely certain.
I gave this four stars instead of five, because the character of Clarry's father didn't ring true. He's portrayed as uniformly uncaring and cold, with no redeeming characteristics, and no explanation of why he might be like this, so I wasn't convinced - though I understood that he was a necessary evil, so to speak, in order for the plot to work. Recommended for middle grades and up

Hilary McKay is quite simply a genius. This is one of the finest novels for young people I have ever read. It should appeal to any age really. Definitely on my list of best books of the year!
