If everyone you grew up with were relying on you to save them, would you be able to do it? Thrust into the deep end, teen Aldora Leoma has to do exactly that.

Her village under attack, she is asked by the king to locate the just stolen Dagger of Protection – one of six protection weapons made centuries earlier to protect others. With nobody else near enough to protect her home, Aldora can’t say no. Aided by a talking prince of the cats and a law enforcer hunting a murderer, failure is not an option.

The Royal Gift is the first in a YA fantasy series, The Common Kingdoms (currently with twenty-seven stories). Following the lives of Aldora Leoma and Royal Official Raneth Bayre, it's great for readers who love fantasy with magic, action, adventure and a dash of romance and crime.

The Royal Gift (The Common Kingdoms Book 1) eBook Drae Box Reviews

A good story. Quick, and holds your interest. A few more plot worthy characters would have been nice. And it's not nice to tell me how ling my review of a script has to be, just like it's not nice to make me do one, rather than putting a decline button for me to use...is that long enough,?????????
I enjoyed this story, and the 3 main characters. There are a few confusing moments, but the excellent editing makes for a satisfying read, and overall the story flowed and was interesting. I hope Raneth and Aldora end up together )
I can't believe someone bashed this book for having a TV. Who cares?
I give the author points for having originality. World creation is a great thing, and the author has taken her world and made it her own. I applaud that.

I see great potential here. Keep at it.
I read at night with my daughter before bed and decided to read this to her as she loves the Narnia series and for some reason this book's description made me think of that series. (Probably cause of the talking cats) It is a YO book and not normally something I personally would pick up (just couldn't get into Narnia) but The Royal Gift really caught my daughters attention. She thoroughly enjoyed the story and really got into the characters. She in particular seemed to relate to Aldora Leoma's character and since she loves mystery, the fact that things were not always readily explained was appealing to her. So though maybe not my type of read, since it excited and entertained my daughter, I give it a four stars. That's what books are supposed to do after all. Their meant to entertain and grab the imagination. Not be picked apart.
Let me start by saying I didn't know the author was so young as I progressed through the story. On that front I would commend her. It was an interesting story with unique ideas/concepts.

My issues were with the dialogue, which came of a bit unrealistic at times, and failed to get me to understand the characters. I also found some of the choreography a bit off and it made it difficult to follow at times.

All in all, an interesting read that would be more of a hit with the younger crowd.
I listened to this book during two days of driving across the countryside. It was an enjoyable listen. Sometimes I got confused on characters but that comes with listening versus reading. especially enjoyed the cat and his role in the book. She characterized cat behavior very well. I look forward to reading more of Drae's works. Well done for 14.
This is an interesting book, the free edition, and perhaps an interesting series. As a Fantasy, it is all one could ask for, action, magic romance, confusion?

This Fantasy world is far different, culturally, than what many fantasy readers are, may be used to. The author does not provide much background as to what you are trying to assimilate. They may give a more detailed explanation in later books but for a first book, even after struggling through it, I was still a bit confused as to what kind of universe this was.

A younger audience, teens and pre-teens, may find this a cool book, if so, enjoy.
Ok so this book is listed under fantasy, but that does not mean it can get away with having no internal logic.
Let's take our story
Girl's village is attacked, magic weapon is stolen, so she gets sent as a runner to the nearby palace to get help. So far so good. But then, once she reaches the destination some hours later, she is told basically... sorry the king does not have his army here, but hey go on a quest and find the missing weapon, we will even give you a magic sidekick cat.... I'm sorry but fantasy or not... teen comes to the center of government with news of an attack/invasion, hey let's send her to somehow reclaim missing magic weapon, it's not like there are oh I don't know adults who can do it. This kind of quest trope is already painful with the prophecy/chosen one narrative to support it, without it just makes zero sense.

Bonus fantasy points for the most ineffective attackers/looters in the universe.
